Shure Beta 58A Review

 

Shure 58A Beta Mic – High-output, Supercardioid dynamic microphone designed for professional vocalists and project studio recording.

 

 

Anyone that's thinking about getting an SM58 should at least consider a Shure 58A Beta mic. The Beta sells for about $60 more than the SM58 but with it's improvements is well worth the bit of extra money.

 

So Why is The Shure 58A Beta Mic Better Than the regular SM58?

 

You'll hear the difference right away in the slightly higher top end response of 16kHz which is 1000Hz higher than the 15Hkz rating for the SM58's. This isn't a huge difference but for live stage applications it could be enough to avoid tweaking the EQ rack and possibly avoid some feedback issues.

Secondly, Shure have improved the shock mount on the Beta 58 giving it better isolation throughout the it's entire body… if you rub or slide your hand down the mic you'll notice less noise. As tough as the SM58 is, they've made the round cover grill even tougher on the Beta.

The Magnet Makes a Difference

Technically speaking, the magnet in the Shure 58A Beta is made from neodymium and the magnet in the SM58 is made from alnico. Alnico magnet is one of the oldest and most important natural magnets we have but the neodymium magnet is the new man-made king of magnets and so is the toughest of all.

 

The better magnet allows the Beta 58 to produce a higher output signal than the SM58… if you were to have each mic on separate channels on a mixing board the Beta would require less gain to bring it up to a good working level. It's got a supercardioid polar pattern which gives it a slightly wider pick up range than the SM58. All this considered, for an extra 60 bucks or so, the Shure 58A Beta is well worth it.
